KATHERINE MAVRIDIS is an Australian knitwear designer based in New York City. Mavridis was awarded a scholarship to attend the MFA Fashion Design and Society Program under Shelley Fox; Donna Karan Professor of Fashion at Parsons, New York City.
Mavridis transcended the traditional boundaries of knitwear by developing a technique of coiling cord into fully-fashioned three-dimensional seamless sculptural garments; the construction of these pieces stemming from knitwear shaping techniques. Mavridis’ graduate collection was bought by Dover Street Market in September 2015 and produced ever since seasonal collections to the revered retailer.
Mavridis held a solo installation at Dover Street Market New York in September 2016, and exhibited her SS16 pieces at Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven, Netherlands in October 2016. Katherine was also selected for the 2017 LVMH prize.
Katherine has recently taken a break from producing collections for commercial purposes to explore further her practice as an art - form rather than adhering to the strict commercial expectations within the discipline of fashion design and the current pace and demands of the industry. She plans to introduce new collections in the future at her own pace, and will also embark on working as a part of the knitwear team for Raf Simons’ CALVIN KLEIN.
